Grants to assist with improving energy efficiency

VHF launched a pilot Heritage Energy Retrofit Grant (HERG) program in September 2015 to assist with energy retrofits for older Vancouver homes. Homes built before 1940 and those listed on the Vancouver Heritage Register were eligible to apply.

The 2015 Pilot Heritage Energy Retrofit Grant program filled quickly. The City of Vancouver has announced they will renew the program’s funding, so the program will re-open this summer, 2016. We hope to start accepting applications again in August and would be happy to alert you once the program is open again.

To be notified when the program is reopening, email us here

For participants in the PILOT HERG PROGRAM, please be aware that the pilot program has been approved to increase the dollar value per tonne of green house gas reductions from $25 to $35 per tonne of reduced GHG, and that insulation will now be assessed for a lifetime of 50 years, up from the initial 20 years. These changes will increase the amount of your final HERG program grant. This will be evident in your revised City Green HERG report, being issued by City Green Solutions the week of June 27th. Feel welcome to call VHF to discuss the changes.

In partnership with the City of Vancouver Sustainability Group, who is providing the funding for the grants, and with energy audit testing conducted by City Green Solutions, the Heritage Energy Retrofit Grant will offer up to $3,000 per house for retrofits that deliver measurable reductions in greenhouse gases (GHG’s). The program is designed to work with Fortis BC and BC Hydro’s Home Energy Rebate Offer program. Retrofits in VHF’s program aim to improve comfort, and reduce energy use and running costs in ways compatible with the conservation of heritage fabric and character elements. The pilot ran from September 2015 to January 2016 and assisted 20 homes. Qualifying retrofits in the Pilot and when the program renews include insulation, air sealing, window repairs and storm windows, and high efficiency forms of heating and hot water. Houses must either be on the Vancouver Heritage Register or built in Vancouver before 1940 and only houses with oil or gas heating are eligible as these offer the largest GHG reduction opportunities. Please note the grant is for new retrofits only and we are not able to apply funds retroactively for already completed projects.

The Heritage Energy Retrofit Grant reached capacity in January 2016 for the pilot program cycle. However, on February 2nd, 2016 the City of Vancouver announced the renewal of funding for the Heritage Energy Retrofit Grant program with a commitment of $150,000 to support pre-1940’s and heritage homes. Applications will begin to be accepted again in the summer 2016. Please check back for updates, or email us to receive an update when the program reopens.

Please download a copy of the Terms and Conditions to understand how the Heritage Energy Retrofit Grant program works. Some adjustments to the Terms and Conditions are being made for the program relaunch  that will increase the value of retrofit measures so check back in August for the revised Terms and Conditions. The current document will help you understand how the program works in partnership with Fortis BC and BC Hydro’s Home Energy Rebate Offer. Please note that if your home does not qualify for the Heritage Energy Retrofit Grant program, the City of Vancouver also announced significant funding for a parallel program for newer houses. Visit the City of Vancouver website for more information.

Vancouver Heritage Foundation worked with The City of Vancouver Sustainability Group to create this tool to help older houses with energy improvements. Retrofits in the program aim to improve comfort, and reduce energy use and running costs in ways compatible with the conservation of heritage fabric and character elements. It supports efforts to see retention of heritage and character homes, while also contributing to the City’s greenhouse gas reduction targets as part of the Greenest City Action Plan. VHF has received the City of Vancouver's support to make the Heritage Energy Retrofit Grant a regular part of its granting program for the next two years, from August 2016 to August of 2018 with a target of retrofitting 150 older homes. Information on the four other grants available through VHF are available on the Get a Grant landing page. Please note the Heritage Energy Retrofit Grant is currently running on a different schedule to our other grants, which have an application deadline of the first Monday every February.

VHF is pleased to acknowledge the participation of City Green Solutions in the development of the Heritage Energy Retrofit Grant program and for providing the certified Energy Auditors who will conduct the program's energy assessment testing on grant recipient homes.
