Holly Ward: News of the Whole World

THE WALL, located on the CBC plaza at 700 Hamilton Street, is a VHF public art initiative on themes related to our built environment. Centered right in the heart of a cultural precinct that includes the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, The Playhouse Theatre, the Vancouver Public Library and the CBC, THE WALL is a unique new platform for artists made possible through a creative partnership between the Vancouver Heritage Foundation, JJ Bean Coffee Roasters and the CBC.  THE WALL project has three components:  a 38 ‘ x 29’ wall that is the site of a changing program of artworks responding to and reflecting upon the city’s built environment; a VHF donor recognition wall beneath the art wall; and an Artist in Residence at the CBC Archives.

Exhibit opening March 7th, 2011

News of the Whole World is a digital image of a small-scale architectural model loosely based on a combination of Russian Constructivist Agitational Stands and stage designs. Parallels can be drawn between the Agitational Stand designs of 1920s Russia, used to disseminate information in order to shape public opinion and sentiment, and the newly renovated CBC plaza with satellites gathering information from around the globe, information processed and distributed from inside the buildings, and strategically positioned outdoor information/ LED screens.

By reflecting back on the function of these Constructivist designs, and creating a playful connection to the context within which it will be viewed, News of the Whole World examines the role of information dissemination in the creation of a public.

Inaugural Exhibit, April through December 2010

The inaugural exhibit was Eric Deis’ architecturally-scaled photograph Last Chance, the image of a small house is framed by a large cedar tree on one side and condominium sales office on the other. In the background, the presence of a residential tower suggests a similar fate for the little house at 1062 Richards Street. The photograph was taken just months before the owner ended her resolute stand off and sold her home of 45 years to make way for advancing development.

The installation of THE WALL was made possible through the generosity of Hotson Bakker Boniface Haden Architects; Knight Signs; Scott Construction, and Mott Electric. The first exhibit was installed in February 2010, and was curated by Other Sights for Artists’ Projects.
