Urban Sketching and Heritage 2025

Get inspired to go outside to sketch your favourite neighbourhood spots or local heritage buildings. Join artist Zandro Tumaliuan on September 6th and immerse yourself in the urban landscape as you learn how to sketch with confidence some of Vancouver’s heritage buildings.

This event is perfect for all artists, from beginners to experienced sketchers, who are passionate about seeing Vancouver’s heritage buildings and urban landscapes come to life on their pages.

The two-hour program will include a brief introduction by Zandro, where he will share his insight as an artist and how Vancouver’s urban landscapes inspire him everyday!

The sketching portion of the day will include time in Yaletown. Throughout this time, you will be given tips and tricks by Zandro to help you understand and document the scenes around you. Bringing together the heritage of each sketching site, a member of VHF staff will share archival photos, and information about each place.

Details on the meeting location will be provided to registrants 2 weeks prior to the event.

Attendees are asked to bring: a black uniball fine tip pen, 3-5 pieces of white 8.5×11 paper (or a sketchbook) and a hard surface to sketch on. Coloured pencils are optional.

Tickets will only be available for purchase until Saturday September 5th, 2025, at 5pm or until sold out.

This program will take place rain or shine. Please dress for the weather.
Registration is required in advance for this program and ID must match the ticket. Unregistered people will not be permitted to join the program. Do not seek out the group on the tour day in hopes of joining as this will disrupt the tour; if you are not able to attend your tour, due to liability reasons an unregistered replacement showing up in your place will not be accepted.
This program takes place in public spaces through Vancouver, BC. Participants will encounter a variety of terrain including uncontrolled road crossings, gravel, stairs, slopes, etc. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at mail@vancouverheritagefoundation.org.
Washrooms will not be available on the tour.

About the Speaker

Zandro Tumaliuan has a background in architecture and interior design, which began during his studies in architecture in the Philippines. Constantly immersed in sketching, he draws continuous inspiration from Vancouver’s urban landscape. Zandro is rarely seen without his trusty pens, sketchbook, pocket watercolours, and inks.

Chinese Societies and Living Heritage: A Walking Tour with Larry Chin

A visible and yet commonly overlooked fabric that lines the streets of Chinatown and their surrounding neighbourhoods are Chinese Societies and Vancouver is home to one of the largest concentrations of them. Join Larry Chin, will guide you on a journey from their origins to present day as he shares his insights on their purpose and relevance in todays Vancouver.

About the Speaker: Larry Chin is an award-winning filmmaker, professional photographer and active volunteer in Vancouver’s Chinatown neighbourhood. He has co-directed a number of documentaries including, Keys to Living Heritage, which highlights Chinese Societies in Vancouver’s Chinatown and Strathcona neighbourhoods. He currently sits on the Board of Directors at Chin Wing Chun Society of Canada, Vancouver Tsung Tsin (Hakka) Association and Chinese Canadian Historical Society of BC and an Honourary member of the Chinatown Society Heritage Buildings Association.

Details:

  • Walking Tours will take place rain or shine. This tour will be two (2) +/- hours long.
  • There is a maximum capacity of 20 people per tour and need 10 registrants to run.
  • Registration is required in advance for all walking tours and ID must match the ticket. Unregistered people will not be permitted to join on the tour date. “Reconciling: A Lifelong Struggle to Belong” a Book Launch event with Musqueam Elder Larry Grant

Spend the evening with Larry Grant sʔəyəɬəq 洪禮興, xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Elder as he shares his life story in his new book "Reconciling: A Lifelong Struggle to Belong"

Larry Grant, born in 1936 to a Musqueam mother and Chinese immigrant father, lost his Musqueam status due to a clause in the Indian Act. Reconciling: A Lifelong Struggle to Belong recounts his life, exploring reconciliation and Indigenous revival, framed by significant Vancouver sites and themes including Chinese immigration and residential schools.

Join us for a conversation between Larry Grant and co-author Scott Steedman, moderated by filmmaker Sarah Ling, and view the history of Vancouver through a new lens. A book signing with Larry and Scott will conclude the evening.

This event is free to attend but registration is required. Donations are welcome upon entry. All donations and net proceeds from book sales will go towards Musqueam language projects including a multilingual children’s book on Larry Grant’s childhood.

About the Speakers
Larry Grant sʔəyəɬəq 洪禮興 is the Elder-in-residence at the Justice Institute of BC and the University of British Columbia’s First Nations House of Learning. He holds a President’s Medal from UBC and an honorary Doctor of Laws from Simon Fraser University. He lives with his wife on the Musqueam reserve in Vancouver.

Scott Steedman has worked in publishing for 35 years, including roles with Dorling Kindersley, Larousse, Raincoast, and Douglas & McIntyre. He teaches publishing at Simon Fraser University and is co-author of Art for War and Peace. He lives in Vancouver, BC.

About our Moderator

Sarah Ling is the Producer of All Our Father’s Relations (2016), an award-winning documentary about Larry Grant’s family. She holds a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of British Columbia with a community-centered research background in Chinese and Indigenous relations. She is President of the British Columbia Historical Federation and co-founder of Chinatown Wonders.
