Participants enrolled in VHF’s Heritage Conservation Education (HCE) courses are invited to attend individual talks and workshops, or they can opt to pursue the Heritage Conservation Certificate, which comes at no additional cost.
These courses and workshops equip homeowners, building owners, and professionals with essential skills and knowledge for the care and maintenance of older buildings and heritage sites. They are available in various formats, including in-person sessions in the Lower Mainland, as well as virtual sessions through Zoom and on-demand via Thinkific.
Most workshops can qualify for Professional Development credits and there are sponsored seats available for emerging professionals through our Student Access Program.
Certificate Requirements
To receive this certificate, you must:
- Take Heritage 101: An Introduction to Heritage Conservation
- Enroll in 15 additional elective credits through HCE or other qualifying programs*
- Attend a house tour (ie. Heritage Discovery Day) or 3 walking tours**
*Heritage Hour talks and Heritage Lunch and Learns qualify for 1 credit each, to a maximum of 3 credits. **Virtual strolls do not qualify for the walking tour requirement.

Completed All Your Credits?
If you have completed your 18 credits of coursework and all additional requirements for the Heritage Conservation Certificate, you must fill out a form so a VHF staff member will be able to verify your course history and award you your certificate!
Course Schedule and Credits
Completion of the certificate can take several years depending on courses schedules. Courses vary each year and some courses and tours are no longer offered. Course credits are assessed based on length of the workshop or program and range between 1-3 credits.
All courses are offered by heritage professionals working in the fields of architecture, trades & construction, heritage conservation, planning, landscaping and related professions.
Our courses are recognized by AIBC, PIBC, BCAAIC, BCSLA, IDIBC and BOABC. All Professional Development credits are self-reporting – talk to your professional body to inquire how to register your attendance.
If you currently enrolled in an educational program and 16-30 years of age, sponsored seats for students are available for Heritage Conservation workshops and courses through the Student Access Program. Please email us if you are eligible and interested in attending an upcoming event.
